Helping a client understand their best options after a 25-year career

My client was referred to me as they were approaching the 25th anniversary of working in a specific industry and had become restless, convinced that they needed to make a change, but wanting to fully understand all of their motivations and the consequences of such a decision. They chose coaching as a way of discussing the issue with somebody who had a neutral perspective; whose only goal was to help the client make the best decision for them.

We quickly established a rapport which enabled us to explore a wider range of issues than the client had originally considered – personal, work-related, financial, family commitments and reputation - each of which had a bearing on the decision. Part way through the coaching sessions a new health related issue came into play, bringing a new dimension to the coaching conversation.

Working with this client demonstrated a real example of the power of good coaching, especially through active listening. The client came into the sessions fully expecting to make a significant career change but came to realise that this was more due to various external expectations than being a strong personal desire.

The more we talked, the more it became clear that they could achieve a new sense of purpose within their existing company. Ultimately, the client chose to remain in their current role, but with a renewed sense of vigour and purpose – understanding that they could create something new in an environment that they were well established in.

Client feedback: “Following the sessions, I am miles ahead of where I was in my own thinking.  I now have a firm understanding of my choices and how they inter-relate in a logical way that I didn’t have before. It was not until I engaged in the coaching with Howard that I was able to mentally put this together. And without the sessions, I doubt whether I would have clearly understood this.”
